PROPOSALS

Having a great idea for a research project is only the first step of the proposal process.

The grant application must be written in such a way that reviewers can easily see how it meets the assessment criteria, and all audiences of the proposal—the portfolio manager who picks out reviewers, the reviewers themselves, and members of the prioritisation panel—must be considered.

To help researchers submit more competitive proposals, this package has been assembled to provide in-depth support with a final draft of an EPSRC standard mode proposal (new investigator award, fellowship, or standard mode). It includes a one-hour one-to-one session to discuss feedback and address any questions.

Proposals are read from three perspectives:

  • As a proofreader, I check whether the language can be improved or clarified.
  • Wearing a portfolio manager hat, I identify places in the proposal that could be strengthened to help ensure it is seen by the ideal panel or reviewers, and I will flag up areas that may potentially cause a problem when processing the proposal. I am also happy to provide the PI with an overview of the funding process during the one-to-one if needed.
  • Although I am unable provide any guidance regarding the technology or research area itself, I will also consider the proposal from the point of view of a reviewer based on common questions and comments.
